Ganz frisch hier das LineUp für das kommende North Sea Surf Festival 2013 am 14.09.2013 im Melkweg, Amsterdam, Niederlande.

Mit dabei sind:

Eine großartige Mischung, wie ich finde. Ich freue mich jedenfalls sehr auf das Festival.

Los geht’s am 14.09.2013 um 16:30 (Einlass 16:00), gegen Mitternacht ist laut aktuellem Plan Ende.

Bezüglich Unterkünften (Privatzimmer, Hotel) kann ich wirklich nur jedem empfehlen, sich UMGEHEND darum zu kümmern, da die Lage aufgrund anderer Veranstaltungen/Messen in Amsterdam an dem Festival-Wochenende sehr, sehr angespannt ist!

INAL NAMES NORTH SEA SURF FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED
Lost Acapulco, The Phantom Four, Bang! Mustang! and The Good The Bad added to the line up.

Today the final names have been announced for the North Sea Surf Festival, the first festival in The Netherlands dedicated to instrumental surf music. Lost Acapulco from Mexico City will be headlining this year´s edition of the festival and will be performing in The Netherlands for the very first time. Furthermore Danish band The Good The Bad and Bang! Mustang! from Leipzig have been added to the line up. The Phantom Four will be performing as well, celebrating the release of their new instrumental album “Murakkam”. Together with The Bambi Molesters, Los Coronas, Pirato Ketchup and Bevel Emboss the line up for the North Sea Surf Festival on September 14th in Amsterdam is now complete.

Several dj´s from widely acclaimed underground parties like Amsterdam Beatclub, Naald & Kraak and Club Rockula will be spinning the best vinyl from the 50´s and 60´s, adding some beat, garage, rock ´n´ roll, ska and Northern soul to the mix. Melkweg Cinema will be showing surf movies that will be announced at a later stage. Together with the presence of a cocktailbar and a record store with collectable surf vinyl and cd´s this will make for a unique surf experience. All in all the festival offers a very divers program and with the coming of Lost Acapulco, The Bambi Molesters, Los Coronas and Bang! Mustang! the North Sea Surf Festival will be host to four renowned surf bands that have never played in The Netherlands before.

Karten sind ab sofort für 17,50 EUR plus Vorverkaufsgebühr erhältlich. Bitte beachten, dass für die Veranstaltung außerdem eine Monatsmitgliedschaft  des Melkweg erworben werden muss, diese Mitgliedschaft kann auf der Ticket-Verkaufsseite direkt mit erworben werden und kostet zusätzlich noch mal 4 EUR.

Nach einem Jahr Pause gibt es dieses Jahr wieder ein North Sea Surf Festival!

Termin: 14.09.2013

Diesmal findet es allerdings nicht direkt an der Küste statt sondern im Melkweg in Amsterdam.

Die Headliner für dieses Jahr wurden soeben angekündigt; kaum zu fassen, es sind die absolut grandiosen Bambi Molesters aus Kroatien. Eigentlich alleine schon ein absolutes Muss, werden aber auch weitere Klasse-Bands dabei sein: Los Coronas (Spanien), Pirato Ketchup (Belgien), Bevel Emboss (Niederlande)

Weitere vier Bands folgen noch!

Zusätzlich gibt’s klassische Surf-Filme dazu im Kino des Melkweg und die Möglichkeit für Vinyl-(Hamster-)Käufe.

Los geht’s diesmal um 16 Uhr, der Vorverkauf beginnt schon an diesem (Oster-)Wochenende, der Eintritt wird wohl 17,50 EUR betragen (im Vorverkauf).

Für solch ein Paket an ausgewählt guter Musik sicher ein mehr als fairer Preis!

North Sea Surf Festival 2013 with Bambi Molesters en Los Coronas

On Saturday September 14th the third installment will take place of the North Sea Surf Festival, the first festival in The Netherlands dedicated to instrumental surf music. The festival will tbe held at the legendary venue De Melkweg in the heart of Amsterdam. The festival will feature 8 bands and this year proudly presents Bambi Molesters and Los Coronas as part of the line up, two of the most popular European surf bands. Besides live shows there will be classic surf movies at the Melkweg Cinema and a record store with collectable surf vinyl and cd’s.

The pre-sale for the festival will start coming Saturday and the first four bands to attend the festival have just been made public. Bambi Molesters from Croatia and Los Coronas from Spain will be playing The Netherlands for the very first time. From Belgium Pirato Ketchup will be playing the festival and the upcoming Amsterdam band Bevel Emboss will be there following impressive radio airplay around the world. In the coming months the other bands will be made public as well as the program for the cinema.

Aus dem Gebirge frisch auf’s Surfbrett haben die Jungs und Mädels von “Beach Girls and the Monster” gefunden.

Die Band kommt nämlich aus Österreich, genauer gesagt, aus Wien (ok, das mit dem Gebirge war also ein bisschen geschwindelt ).

Musikalisch haben wir es hier nicht mit instrumental surf der reinen Lehre zu tun, sondern bewegen uns zwischen den vocal surf Bands der frühen 60er mit weiblichem Gesang, klassischem instrumental Surf, gepaart mit Beat-Musik, gelegentlich ein bisschen Ricky King, Indie-Anklänge und das alles dann irgendwie durch den Wolf gedreht.

Die 4-Track 7”-Single mit dem Titel “I go Surfing” ist jedenfalls eine gelungene Mischung, die zumindest mit große Lust auf eine komplette CDs des Quartetts aus dem Alpenland macht, auch wenn Hardcore-instrumental-Puristen enttäuscht sein werden.

Schon seit einiger Zeit liegt eine wirklich wunderbare EP auf meinem Schreibtisch und wartet darauf, ein paar warme Worte zugedacht zu bekommen, die das Werk wirklich verdient hat…

The Illuminators aus Göteborg (warum betitelt die Band das selbst eigentlich als Gothenburg?)  in Schweden liefern wunderbaren hochenergetischen instrumental surf, wie ich ihn absolut liebe.

Die EP enthält 6 Titel, sowohl Cover als auch eigene Werke und ist durchgängig Spitzenklasse, selbst die “Hava Nagila”-Version ist gelungen, obwohl ich das Stück eigentlich fast nicht mehr hören kann.

Am Besten gefallen mir aber “Nevsky Prospekt” und “The Eye”, welches herrlich in das Spy-Subgenre abdriftet.

Ich kann die EP nur jedem Liebhaber typischer instrumental surf Musik ans Herz legen, das gute Stück gehört in jede Sammlung.

Bezogen werden kann die EP entweder über die Webseite der Band oder alternativ bei den gängigen Anbietern digitaler Musik wie hier bei iTunes, allerdings leider nicht beim deutschen Amazon-MP3-Store. Auch bei Spotify wird man fündig: Illuminators bei Spotify

Nach Jahren des “Blindflugs” und des mehr oder weniger automatischen Postens von irgendwie Surf-Musik-relevanten Youtube-Videos möchte ich dem Ganzen hier doch mal wieder langsam ein bisschen Leben einhauchen…

Den Anfang machen zwei Platten-Kurzkritiken, von denen die eine schon viel zu lange auf meinem Schreibtisch liegt (Sorry, Martin!), die andere dafür aber absolut aktuell ist…

Stay tuned. Und schaut gelegentlich mal vorbei, es wird wieder ab und zu echte Neuigkeiten und “lecker Musik” geben!

Rare West Coast Surf Instrumentals (2001) / Ace Records UK “All of the two dozen cuts on this anthology were issued between 1959 and 1964 on Titan, a small Los Angeles indie. Actually, a few of these — particularly the pre-1962 cuts — are not surf instrumentals so much as the pounding instrumental rock that was influential in the birth of surf music. But who’s talking? Just one of these was a national hit, and a modest one at that — the Strangers’ aptly named “Caterpillar Crawl” made it just inside the Top 50 in 1959. As a whole, the compilation’s OK but nothing more: period instrumental and early surf music. Interestingly though, a few fairly big names pop up here and there. Joel Hill of the Strangers eventually landed in Canned Heat and the Flying Burrito Brothers in the 1970s, and plays some pretty wicked blues-rock guitar on the 1959 single “Hill Stomp,” one of the few cuts here that transcends the generic. Davie Allan of “Blues Theme” fame is heard on his 1964 single, “War Path”/”Beyond the Blue”; these are among the better tracks in their sub-”Apache” style. The Playboys, heard on a not-bad 1963 single, are actually the same Playboys of Gary Lewis & the Playboys fame. Ray Hunt of the Surfmen would later join the Soul Giants, who would eventually evolve into the Mothers of Invention after he was replaced by Frank Zappa. Surf music cover version of the Coldplay song “Viva La Vida” done with heavy reverb on the guitar by Pollo Del Mar. The Ventures used to cover all the popular hits, turning them into instrumental gems. At some point, surf bands stopped covering current songs, and they became “Oldies” bands.
